Words To Heal By – NCHS FCA Holding Book Drive To Help Former Student
The NCHS FCA is helping a former student, Brooke Bowman, and would like to cordially invite all students and community members to participate in her Book Drive – “Words to Heal By” during the months of October and November.
The goal for this project is to impact as many youth as possible by using the love for books and reading’s therapeutic qualities to brighten the day for Mayo Clinic patients.
During one of Brooke’s multiple trips to the Mayo Clinic this year, she discovered a wonderful thing being done to cheer up children while at the hospital seeking treatment.
The kids there suffer from diseases ranging from cerebral palsy to adolescent lupus and range in age from newborn to 18 years old.
In order to break up the intensive appointment schedule and to provide a positive experience during an otherwise stressful time, a man wearing a wizard’s hat walks around the children’s floor and hands out books to the children to read while waiting.
These books are donated from all around the world for the patients to read, enjoy, and take home.
Upon further investigation, she found out that 50,000 children are treated every year at the Mayo Clinic, and every time a child goes for an appointment they have the option to select a book.
Together we can help provide this wonderful resource that allows young patients to escape and explore places through books that they otherwise may not be able to.
If you have new or gently used children’s books for ages newborn to 18 years old that you would like to donate please bring them to NCHS or call the school office for more information.
The books will be delivered between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
