American society today has become about as polarized as it was during the Civil War.

People seem to be at one end of the spectrum or the other where morals and values are concerned.

There’s no spirit of cooperation anymore and compromise is now defined as one side giving in completely to the other.

None of these are good things given the current conditions in our country.

Drug use is rampant, children are killing themselves and one another, alcoholism is everywhere, marriages are failing in record numbers, and sexually transmitted diseases are still prevalent.

Politicians claim the problem is a lack of social programs and that more money is needed.

Scholars claim the problem is a lack of knowledge and that more education is needed.

Sociologists point to neighborhood environments and claim that more social reforms and developments are needed.

But despite all the effort and money directed at these problems, the societal situation is not improving.

Why?

Because these problems cannot be fixed with more time and more money. These problems are spiritual in nature and they derive from a spiritual enemy and no amount of money, education, social reform or development can or ever will fix these problems.

The Bible makes it very clear that our enemy, the devil, is not part of the physical world, but instead part of the spiritual world.

The chaos, corruption and evil which exist in our society today stem from his assault on all that is good. He’s at war with us and our country whether we realize it or not.

In Ephesians 6, Paul writes: “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not war against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

When we try to fight a spiritual war against a spiritual enemy without spiritual ammunition – the guidance given to us in God’s Word – we might as well try to drive a car without an engine. The Bible is our spiritual ammunition and without it, there’s no way to move forward or make progress in this spiritual battle.

The presence of evil in our society is a spiritual problem which originates from a spiritual enemy.

The ammunition needed to conduct spiritual warfare against a spiritual enemy does not come from money, education or social reforms.

The spiritual ammunition needed to change our country and fight the evil forces at work in our society can only be found in the Bible, God’s Word of truth for all of mankind.
