Multiple Fatalities Following Traffic Crash On IL-15 West of Nashville

The Nashville News received the following Press Release from the office of Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger:

At 4:36 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1st, our office was dispatched to the scene of a multiple fatality traffic crash on Illinois State Route 15 near Madison Road, west of Nashville. A vehicle operated by Patricia C. Smith, 67 of Louisville, Illinois was traveling west on Route 15 when she crossed the center line while negotiating a curve and struck an eastbound vehicle head on. That vehicle was being operated by Karen Lunte, 70 of Nashville. The Smith vehicle came to rest on its top in the ditch south of the roadway. The Lunte vehicle came to rest in the middle of the roadway facing west. All occupants were entrapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated by the Nashville Fire Department. Lunte was pronounced dead upon arrival at an area hospital. A passenger in the Lunte vehicle; Diane Maschhoff, 65 of Hoyleton was pronounced dead at the scene along with Smith by Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger at 4:48 and 4:47 p.m. respectively.

A traffic reconstruction team from the Illinois State Police was dispatched to the scene. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for routine testing. Other agencies on the scene included the Washington County Ambulance Service, Nashville Police Department, Illinois State Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner. The crash continues to be investigated by the Illinois State Police and Washington County Coroner’s office.
