Ervin Goeden, 93, of Omaha, Neb., was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Friday, January 5, on I-64 eastbound near the 47.5 mile marker, with the crash occurring at approximately 5:05 p.m.

The preliminary release from District 13, Illinois State Police stated that a 2014 Toyota Avalon driven by Eugene P. Tomasello, 56, of Omaha, Neb. (referred to as a family member of Goeden’s) was eastbound on I-64.

Goeden was wearing his seatbelt and riding in the back, while his wife, Patricia A. Goeden, 81, also of Omaha, Neb. was a passenger as well.

The vehicle’s occupants were taken to Washington County Hospital. Tomasello was treated for minor injuries and Patricia Goeden was treated for major injuries there before being evacuated by helicopter to a St. Louis hospital.

A 8:11 p.m., a doctor at the WCH Emergency Room pronounced Ervin Goeden dead from the injuries sustained.

Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger was dispatched to the WCH ER at 8:29 p.m., where he determined the cause of death to be a traumatic pneumothorax – the manner is accidental. No autopsy is planned.

Following the collision, the driver of the black car did not stop at the scene of the crash, and the vehicle was seen continuing east on I-64. The vehicle may possibly have a transfer of silver paint on the middle or rear of the passenger side.
