April Is Occupational Therapy Awareness Month

Washington County Hospital (WCH) would like to bring awareness and say thank you to the Occupational Therapists who work with and help the people in our community.

Occupational Therapists and Therapy Assistants provide a vital role in working with people of all ages to let them participate in the activities they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities.

Occupational Therapists work with our young children with disabilities to overcome obstacles in everyday activities such as school and in social situations.

WCH Occupational Therapists work with children who may have Autism, ADD/ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, any Sensory Issues, Developmental Delays, TBI, and more. They are able to work with the children to learn better hand-eye coordination, balance, body awareness, psychological/social development, behaviors, sensory processing, and many other things.

The Occupational Therapy staff at WCH can also help adults and seniors. Therapy can help them regain skills during recovery from a major illness or accident.

They can also help to aid in the ability to stay as independent as possible with home evaluations that give suggestions for home modifications. They also offer safe driving education and helpful activities for daily living.

WCH, Nashville School District and countless families in our community have helped to sponsor a remarkable space called the Sensory Room. This space was developed in memory of Traci Storey to work with our youth with special needs.

The Sensory Room allows children to have the sensory interactions and therapeutic activities to give them engaging activities to learn how to cope with everyday situations.

The Sensory Room is available to any child with autism, sensory integration disorders, learning disabilities, and more (with Doctors orders). The Sensory Room is located in the Nashville Middle School.

For more information about the Sensory Room go to www.angelforautism.com or contact the Occupational Therapy Department at 618-327-2317.
