The Nashville Hornettes girls basketball team capped off the year with their annual awards banquet this past week, held March 8 in the NCHS Cafeteria. The Hornettes finished the year with a record of 22-8, went undefeated in conference play, and won the IHSA Class 2A Nashville Regional. The Hornettes season ended against Harrisburg in the Sectional Semi-Finals.
The Hornettes were led this season by their three seniors, Rachael Kell, Paige Kasten, and Karly Stanowski. Stanowski led the team in points per game, rebounds, and free throws this season. Kasten led the team in three point field goals and three point field goal percentage this season. Kell led the Hornettes in assists and was second on the team in rebounds.
Nashville started out the season with a second place finish in the Nashville Girls Thanksgiving Tournament. Overall the Hornettes finished 3-1 in the tournament, losing the championship by one point to Okawville.
In their second tournament of the season, the Hornettes played stiff competition and came away with a sixth place finish. Nashville defeated Althoff, and Cahokia in the tournament, but fell to O’Fallon and Central.
In their final tournament of the season, Nashville defeated Salem in the first round, but fell to Civic Memorial and Okawville in their next two contests.
The Hornettes defeated Althoff in the first game of Regionals, and defeated Sesser-Valier/Waltonville to bring home a Regional Championship. The Hornettes season came to an end with a loss to Harrisburg.
At the banquet, Kell, Kasten, and Stanowski were all camed Co-Team MVP. Kell was also awarded the Assist Award for leading the Hornettes in assists this season. Kell finished with 57 assists on the season. Libby Ahlers received the Defensive Award. Ahlers often drew the assignment of the top offensive player of the opposing team this season. Sabrina Kollbaum was given the Most Improved Award. Sophie Heck received the Hornette Award.
The JV team finished the season with a record of 12-4 this season, with a 7-3 record in conference. Emily Stern led the JV team this year with 9.4 points per game. Luechtefeld was second with 7.4 points per game.
The Freshmen team finished with a record of 4-6 on the season.
