One of the best runners in NCHS history finished out his high school career with another State Medal. NCHS Senior Brandon Schnitker brought home fourth place in the 800M Run at the IHSA Class 1A State Finals this past week. Schnitker was the only Nashville runner to advance out of Prelims.
Schnitker picked up where he left off last year during the Prelims, qualifying for the finals in the 800M Run. Schnitker, who was placed in the final heat, knew exactly what he needed to do to qualify and did just that with a time of 1:56.47 finishing fourth in his heat. After the race, Schnitker talked about his heat. “I knew coming in, this was basically going to be the finals. Getting to watch the other first two heats, big help, knowing that if you run under 1:58 you’re in. I went in, just wanting to stay with the pack, which I did, and I wasn’t really too concerned about making a move there at the end, saw the time coming around the 200, knew it was going to be a good time, so I just relaxed going in.”
When the finals came around on Saturday, only one Hornet was left standing as Schnitker looked to repeat his performance at last year’s finals. In 2017 Schnitker finished second in the 800M Run in the State Finals.
In a stacked field that featured eight returners from last year’s final, Schnitker came home with a fourth place finish with a season-best time of 1:54.78.
