The Nashville Hornets boys basketball team stayed undefeated this past week with a 75-38 win over SIRR-Mississippi Division foe Sparta. It was the only match up for the Hornets this week, as their game against Benton, which was scheduled for Saturday December 17 was canceled due to weather. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 31. The Hornets record on the season is 7-0.
After a close game in the first quarter, the Hornets broke the game open in the second quarter of action. With the Hornets leading 15-10 after the first, Nashville got hot from behind the arc. The Hornets hit six three point shots in the second quarter, three from Ryan Brink, and three from Bryce Bultman. Overall the Hornets outscored Sparta 29-9 in the second quarter. The big quarter turned a five point lead after the first quarter, into a commanding 25 point halftime lead.
The Hornets continued the onslaught in the second half, outscoring Sparta 16-12 in the third and 15-7 in the fourth quarter of play. The Hornets finished with three players in double figures, and 10 different players scored in the win.
After the game, coach Brad Weathers talked about the win. “Any conference win is a good win, home or on the road. I would of liked to have played a cleaner game the first half. I think we kind of overdid it at times or under-did it depending on what the situation was, kept us from getting an earlier lead. Overall we held them down and created quite a few turnovers. And one thing, when I say play cleaning. I don't think at times we made the best decisions even though we only had a handful of turnovers and they had 26 I believe. But a good team win, everyone involved, and everyone contributed something.”
The Hornets were led by Brogan Kemp, who finished with 16 points to lead all scorers. Both Brink and Bultman scored in double figures for Nashville as they each finished with 13 points. Hayden Heggemeier and Langdon Briles each finished with seven points apiec in the win. Brandon Schniter, Trevor Meier, and Carson Parker all had five points in the game while Kelton Harre and Dale Anderson each finished with two points to round out the scoring.
The Hornets finish out before Christmas with a game against Carterville Wednesday December 21 at 7:45 p.m. The Hornets finish out the month of December with the Mater Dei Holiday Tournament. The Hornets received the second overall seed, behind last year's champion Okawville. Mater Dei received the number three seed, followed by Briarcrest with the number four seed, and Mascoutah with the number five seed. Nashville was placed in Pool B alongside Mater Dei, Sacred Heart Griffin, Carlyle, and Metro East Luteran.
Overall 25 games will be played over a four day period. The Hornets play the first game of the tournament as they face off against Metro East Lutheran at 9 a.m. On December 27.
