Washington County 4-H Offers Painting Workshops

Painting workshop 16 BW.jpg

Dwight Shubert teaches by talking to youth about different paint brushes at one of the painting workshops offered last week.

Okawville Busy Bees club leader Dwight Shubert has been teaching 4-H members to paint for many years by offering painting workshops not only to his 4-H members, but also to other youth as well. This year Dwight taught four painting workshops for Washington County 4-H in early December.

Twenty youth participated over the course of four evenings, six of which were brand new 4-H members. Dwight teaches the participants about brush strokes, combining paint for effect, layering, types of paint, types of brushes and visual affect. He teaches the youth to use oil based paint on a 16 X 20 canvas. Each child leaves the workshop with a finished painting, ready to hang.

This great workshop opportunity has spread to other county 4-H programs as well. Dwight has also taught 4-H painting workshops in Bond, Clinton and Marion counties for the past few years.

Master Gardner Training Makes a Great Gift

University of Illinois offers Master Gardener training for area residents. Training will begin January 24, 2017 for Bond, Clinton, Jefferson, Marion and Washington Counties.

If you know someone who loves gardening and sharing their knowledge with others, along with working on volunteer projects in their community, then you should consider giving the gift of knowledge. They do not need to be skilled gardeners, just have the desire to learn about gardening. The course will cover a wide variety of topics over ten sessions including annuals, perennials, woody plants, vegetables, insects and diseases, soils, fruits, lawns, and a whole lot more. The Master Gardener program is open to any adult (age 19 or older).

Everyone has someone on their list that is hard to buy for (or maybe it’s you). Consider giving the Master Gardener course to friends and family who love to garden. Register today for upcoming classes; deadline is January 9, 2017.

This class is taught by University of Illinois Educators and includes a detailed reference book as part of the course. For additional information call 618-526-4551 or visiting http://web.extension.illinois.edu/mg/.
