Mission Viejo Off-Duty Fire Captain Chris Chang Runs Into Burning Nail Salon After Electric Vehicle Crashes Into Storefront and Bursts Into Flames

MISSION VIEJO, CALIFORNIA | PUBLIC SAFETY | November 6, 2026

Quick Take

  • An electric vehicle crashed into Blossom Nails & Spa in Mission Viejo and immediately caught fire on Wednesday morning.
  • Off-duty Orange County Fire Authority Captain Chris Chang ran into the burning salon to make sure everyone got out, then helped fight the flames.
  • A nearby fire crew diverted from another call, and together they stopped the fire before it spread to the rest of the strip mall.

What’s happening?

Video of the fiery crash is spreading online, showing thick black smoke pouring from the storefront as firefighters attack the flames. The Orange County Fire Authority is crediting Chang with helping save the shopping center from much worse damage.

Chang happened to be nearby when the crash happened. With no protective gear or breathing equipment, he went straight into the burning business to clear it out.

Where and when?

Firefighters were called at 11:42 AM on Wednesday, November 4, to Blossom Nails & Spa at 24395 Alicia Parkway, near Via Linda. The salon sits in a strip mall next to a dry cleaner and Casa Franco, a Mexican restaurant.

According to OCFA, the electric vehicle slammed into the salon and burst into flames right away. Posts online identify the car as a Hyundai Ioniq, though officials have not confirmed the model. Chang said bystanders used fire extinguishers to knock down some of the first flames and helped pull the woman driving the car out of the vehicle.

How did firefighters stop the fire?

The captain and engineer from OCFA Engine 12 heard the dispatch on their radio while heading to a different call. They turned around and became the first fire crew on scene.

Working alongside Chang, the two crew members secured a water supply, stretched multiple hoselines and knocked down the fire before it could spread into the rest of the building. The salon was heavily damaged, but neighboring businesses were spared from serious fire damage.

Who is Captain Chang?

Chang took an unusual path to firefighting. According to his department profile, he worked as a chiropractor before going through the fire academy and completing paramedic school. As a captain, he mentors younger firefighters and leads crews on emergency scenes.

He described the moment as surreal and said it was either the right place at the right time or just a coincidence. Being off duty, he said, he simply thought, here we go.

What comes next?

Officials have not said what caused the driver to crash into the salon. The incident remains under investigation.

Fires involving electric vehicles can be harder to control because lithium-ion batteries can reignite. If you see a vehicle crash into a building, call 911, move people away from the area and avoid breathing in the smoke.
